Here’s a job ad on LinkedIn from recruitment consultants Ellwood Atfield. It is for the role of Head of Political Affairs for “a global player in a controversial industry”. Part of the ad reads:
“Work in the heart and capital of the West Country at the Global Headquarters of a FTSE 30 company, which manufactures, markets, distributes and sells leading branded products in over 160 countries.”
The role is based in Bristol. (It’s Imperial Tobacco, by the way, and there’s no such thing as a “FTSE 30″).My understanding of somewhere being in “the heart” of somewhere else is that it is in the middle. Birmingham is in the heart of England, Dover isn’t. Leicester Square is in the heart of London, Croydon isn’t.So, for the benefit of Ellwood Atfield and anyone else tempted to refer to Bristol as the heart of the West Country, I offer the helpful graphic below to print off and put on the wall of your office.
